"Hardcore" is one of those industry buzzwords which really means "upper-class tech-geek white American males with disposable income". Sure, there was a time when this social group dominated both videogame sales and production (1960-1990 or so) but not anymore.
Today gaming is for everyone. Practically every major country (e.g. China, India) is making games, and the early adopters are quite diverse in age, technical savvy, gender and nationality. The game audience has grown to at least 1 billion consumers (thanks to cheap consoles and games on cellphones). This will likely double by 2010 to 2 billion consumers. In ten years, videogames will have the global reach that TV does today.
