I was trying to explain that in my posts above. Games media pros, like devs, got into the games industry for passionate reasons, not financial. There's no real money to be made as an individual developer, unless you own the house you work for, and are, basically, screwing your employees out of a decent paycheck -- in other words, the same as with almost any business. Publishers take the vast majority of income from all but the most successful titles, and publishers are owned by the public. Devs aren't in it for money. Neither are the press. Therein lies the rub. Ask a passionate chef what he/she thinks of fast food. Ask a passionate movie fan what he/she thinks of most summer blockbusters. Ask someone who is passionate about wine, chocolate, art, etc. what they think of the commonplace iterations of those products. I think the media's disdain for the Wii is pretty obvious. Like it or not, the Wii is the McDonald's of the console industry -- cheap games, fast. You don't sell quality meals at McDonald's, because people don't go to McDonald's for quality meals. McDonald's is big money. The Wii is big money. That's about it. And food critics? They don't go to McDonald's very often, and when they do, come out proclaiming how great it is to the rest of the world. |
Ok, NOW I see where you were going and I'll say that it is quite insightful what you've wrote, but few things I don't wholeheartedly agree with:
1) Devs not in it for the money, I'm sure there's love there but everyone needs to make a living, don't teachers and parents tell kids find something you enjoy doing and try to get paid doing it?
2) Wii is the Mickey D's: For many a third party publisher sure they threw shit on a shingle lol. But Nintendo themselves have really put out some quality efforts and Thirds are starting to come around. All of Mickey D's stuff is crap, not all of Wii's games are. Both are big money I'll give you that.
I think the gaming media is primed and ready for a disruption, myself.
Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:
If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.
If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.
