One of the reasons this argument is always foolish is that no one bothers to define what a "Hard-Core" gamer is ...
Every developer who produces a nichè title assumes that the people who buy their game are the "Hard-Core" audience; every developer who produces a big-budget blockbuster assumes that the people who buys their game are the "Hard-Core" audience. Who are these "Hard-Core" gamers and what makes them more desireable than the rest of us? Why am I a member of the unwashed masses, unable to be worthy of the respect of being "Hard-Core"?
