Why it is not a JRPG:

1) You capture little beasts and they do the combat for you.

2) It's not story focused at all.

3) It is aimed at children

4) While a JRPG story usually involves a grand adventure, Pokemon's story involves a teenager trapping small animals inside miniature prisons and forcing them to fight until they fall unconscious.

I suppose I exaggerated a little. It certainly is an RPG, and it's Japanese. It shares some traits with JRPGs, but I wouldn't consider it a JRPG. It just doesn't take itself seriously enough. I suppose when I think "JRPG" I think something like Final Fantasy, so Pokemon would be a very different kind of JRPG.

It's still awesome, though

Dragon Quest Monsters is still an RPG and it focuses on 'monster collecting'.  And how in the hell is a game not a JRPG because it is aimed at kids and doesn't have a 'deep' storyline?  Your post seems to be leaning towards the view that all JRPGs have to be like Final Fantasy/Tales of Vesperia to be 'JRPGs'.  May I point you to games like Paper Mario, Chrono Trigger and of course, the entire Dragon Quest series.

I graciously accept defeat at the hands of those who know more about JRPGs than me.

FF13 will be the best selling console JRPG, then.
