That right there is Nintendo's challenge. To find something new and different enough that people see the reason they need to upgrade. Iwata said that they don't have a timeframe for when they'll release their next system, and that they plan to do it when there are few more new ideas for the current hardware.
That said, by your logic the non-gamers would never have bought a Wii in the first place since the DS came first.
