SNES was a great console. However, the Playstation took gaming to another level into a new era. Playstation 1 was the first console to have video games run on a CD. It is also the same console that would put the final fantasy series into a higher level than the previous game did on the nintendo consoles. Playstation, during its time, establish some very popular IPs such as Crash Bandicoot, Spyro and Tomb Raider.

Super Nintendo took gaming to a new level too. It was the first 16-bit Nintendo system and the first to use mode7 graphics!

As for first CD-based, Sega Saturn sais hai.

The PC Engine CD came out in Japan in 1988 and the us in 1989. The Sega CD, Neo Geo CD, and Philips CD-i also predate the PS1. Tomb Raider 1 started off as Sega Saturn exclusive. It later became multiplatform. In fact Sony paid Eidos not to release Tomb Raider 2 on Saturn. Spyro and Crash were Universal Interactive IPs that Sony paid exclusivity for.
