Super Nintendo took gaming to a new level too. It was the first 16-bit Nintendo system and the first to use mode7 graphics!
As for first CD-based, Sega Saturn sais hai.

The PC Engine CD came out in Japan in 1988 and the us in 1989. The Sega CD, Neo Geo CD, and Philips CD-i also predate the PS1. Tomb Raider 1 started off as Sega Saturn exclusive. It later became multiplatform. In fact Sony paid Eidos not to release Tomb Raider 2 on Saturn. Spyro and Crash were Universal Interactive IPs that Sony paid exclusivity for.
