Dirge of Cerebrus was a spin-off of Final Fantasy VII. It relied on what happened in FF7 for everything about it.
FFT is interesting, while it is a departure from the series, it's still an RPG.
Crystal Bearers looks like a complete change from the Gamecube and DS versions in all aspects. I think it's a great thing.
EDIT: And no, I don't really consider Dirge to be a real FF game.
