reminds me of my mom, who consistently bought me stuff I didn't want.
Like for one Christmas, I wanted a ghostbusters toy (dr venkman), a raphael ninja turtle, GI-JOE for nintendo, and Creepy Crawlers among other things. This is what I got:
A mouser from Ninja Turtles, Egon from ghostbusters (that I already had), a GI-Joe action figure, Bible Adventures for the NES, and a CreepyCrawlers mold set (ALthough I asked for the oven, which is required for the molds to be used)
I never complained, I pretended to be happy and never made a fuss. But at that point, I realized that if I ever wanted to have my own things I would have to buy them myself. I got a job when I was 12, saved up, and moved out at 17. I now live two states away in Boston and tell my mom I don't want anything for my CHristmas or birthday and if she sends me things I give them away.
EDIT: WOW 5$ a day!?! I got 10$ a week!

my mother did stuff like that too, but she didn't care if we wanted to exchange anything she bought for something of the same value. So long as we didn't spend more.
I got $5 week, but all my necesities were provided for me, so the $5 was purely for gifts for others and buying stuff for myself. But the $5 we got wasn't even for free, we had to do 5 chores a week, and if we missed any of them, then we got $1 off for each. That was after we renegotiated, because when I was really young it was only $0.25 each chore, and when I was 5, it was a nickel.
