This. I was going to type almost exactly this earlier, but got side-tracked.
I have played all three multiple times on all difficulty levels and i (and i'm obviously not alone) actually like that they changed the formula up a little in the third game. Also a big part of what makes Metroid games great is atmosphere and art and to be honest in the second game the atmosphere wasn't that enjoyable and the art just wasn't as good.
