No, not really. Part of the reason the Metroid games still look good is because the art style is so good and the games run smooth as butter, this is due to the focus of the developers and not necessarily something that is improved with better hardware.
edit: Metroid 3 is still technically a good deal better looking than either Metroid 1 or 2.
