Yeah, i wouldn't exactly trust reviewers on this. Between them, they prefer the GameCube/Classic controls for Brawl and Mario Kart Wii (rather outrageous in the latter context, really), so for them to say that "waggle is worse" really doesn't faze me.
I could imagine Balance Board controls being slow, but thats merely an issue of the human body.
