What we're seeing now is the true negative effect of Sony's decision to shoehorn expensive technology into the PS3. Because they can't remove the things driving up the cost of the unit (Cell, Blu-Ray), they're removing features that people actually care about (backwards compatibility). It won't have a lasting or substantial impact upon sales.
