MS can either make $$$ or outsell PS3, NOT BOTH.

Neither 360 or PS3 is making much profit from the consoles themselves. Such has been true for a while. Yet this is not as strange as many would make it seem. PS2 was sold initially at a loss, spending almost all the money made from the PS1 console sales.

The thing is, these companies usually eat the console costs, only to get it back from Game sales. Not to mention, MS also has the sales of XboxLive subscriptions that is highly profitable. That is where the real money is.
