Going back to look at the NES there were two reasons to buy an NES. One: it was the first game system available after the crash, and Two: Super Mario Brothers. It was the first great game on the system and remained so for a couple of years. It was soley responsible for NES sales at least until games like Metroid and Zelda came out a couple of years later.

When you look at Wii, sure Wii Sports was in the box, but the first reason to buy the console was Zelda: Twilight Princess, then Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros., Wii Fit, and Mario Kart Wii, and while these other games were responsible for Wii sales Wii Sports was just riding along in the box and being given sales numbers it probably hadn't earned.

So 3.7 million copies of Twilight Princess sold over 14 million Wiis in the Wiis first year? Personally, if all I wanted was Twilight Princess and was not interested in the gameplay of Wii Sports (and what it could mean for other games) I could have paid $50 instead of $300.
