Sales - what does it matter? - View Post

Okay, this is something I don't get about the original post:

"I've been reading some of the discussion threads about sales, and it is the typical jihadesque milieu of fanboys throwing castigations and pejoratives at the other side."

What does that even mean? Do I have to dissect that sentence with the help of a dictionary? That didn't even confuse me though. What confused me is how he made sentences with words that I've never even seen used in my life (save for "jihad," but not too many times in this context). And after that first sentence or so, his writing was high school quality at best and he forgot to capitalize most of his words (plus I'm pretty sure the punctuation sucked).

Just for fun, I used an online dictionary to find out what his sentence really meant.

"I've been reading some of the discussion threads about sales, and it is the typical jihadesque milieu of fanboys throwing castigations and pejoratives at the other side."

Before I get started, what kind of a word is jihadesque? Seriously? Are you thinking of jihadist, or is there some branch off of the main work that was mixed with the word rubenesque?

So, basically, you've been reading threads about sales. And you would describe them as (using the word "jihadist" instead of "jihadesque"):

"I've been reading some of the discussion threads about sales, and it's like the typical holy war for an idea or principle surroundings of fanboys throwing criticisms and reprimands and I-don't-even-know-what-to-do-with-pejorative-because-it's-primarily-an-adjective at the other side."

Well I'll figure it out one of these days.

*claps hands*  that is hilarious.  the ol' make fun of the guy for using language in a way that is beyond one's comprehension...brilliant.

and a pejorative is a noun.   "moron", which springs to mind, is a pejorative.  it can also be used as an adjective as well.  did you hear the great news?  words can be used in several different parts of speech!

i don't really get what is so hard to follow in my post.  i'm not condemning the study of sales.  i even admit in the original post that it is interesting for me, hence my presence at a sales site.  this is not brain surgery.  it is on how some people use the sales figures that i was commenting.

and i didn't forget to capitalize any words.  i just don't bother when i post.

Language is a tool for communication.  Part of the skill in using language is adapting your style to suit a given situation.  If you swear like a trooper in front of your work collegues it may be thought unprofessional, conversely using big words in front of the average person on the street and they'll think you are being a smart-ass, whether or not that was your intention.  This is a games forum, be smart and allow people to focus on the content rather than the style of your posts.
