you people drasticaly underestimate how well hardware holds up to being on. turning a system on and off is far harder on it than constantan running unless you run it in say 20F or 98F ambient temps.
your hardwares main enemies are, exsesive heat, humidity, rapid temprature change, static shock and copper creep (when the material used to print the circut boards slowly branches out and crosses over to form a new cicut and frys the board ..... right now no one understands why it happens)
my 360 is routinely on for 2 or 3 days I simply forget its on, or leave it on so my roomate could finnish the game while im off at work, use an av switch for diffrent systems....
my tower only goes off when i head out of state, software installs, hardware upgrades. out of 4 years ive had it i speculate its been on for 3.2.... i was out of country for 6 months..
my laptop, is always either on or in hybernation
if your worried im wasting power when idle they fold@home.... i do video design and graphic design so id say i work on them at least 10 hours a day and fool around in between videogames.....
only my printers, scanners and back up hd get turned off. my monitor goes to sleep quickly lcd samsung
you may think i wast electricity, but most of it is nominal, and if it makes you fell better i use cfl bulbs through out my house exept on my light table.
