Wii Sports can easily be the greatest game ever. If introducing to a whole segment of the population how much fun video games can be isn't a great accomplishment, I don't know what is.
An analogy for those who thinks that MSG4 or GTA4 or Zelda TP can quite qualify as "greatest". As a classically trained musician, I can argue that Beethoven's "greatest" work is his Grosse Fugue. There are some people out there who would agree with me, but we would be those that have defined "great" as "masterful", "unparalleled", or other superlatives. But in terms of influence, it does not come close to some of Beethoven's other works, in particular his 9th Symphony. Not only does it qualify as a great work in every sense as "masterful" and its synonyms, it also has an influence arguably unparalleled in Western music.
If I want to win an argument, I would state that his 9th Symphony would be the greatest composition of all time.
Wii Sports is young, and the jury is still out. However, there's no doubt in my mind that it is no where close to the status of Super Mario Bros. Like many have said here, though Wii Sports will be tremendously influential, as the next generation of consoles will attest, its innate qualities are somewhat lacking. I do think that its innovation and its influence down the road ALONE make it the greatest game of this generation, despite the clear lack of depth in Wii Sports.
the Wii is an epidemic.
