That's not possible. To do a hostile takeover of a company from another nation, the governments of both nations have to agree to it. There is no way the Japanese government would agree to something like that. Also, many European governments and the Austrialian government may have also had the power to block the merger.

The legend goes that Microsoft tried just this, but i forget where exactly the truth of that ends and the myth of it begins (there was a rather incredible story circulating at one point)

I don't think it was a hostile takeover--I was under the impression that they tried to buy them out normally and Iwata told them what to do to themselves.
