G4's article on the interview actually put up a retraction on this point, at the bottom of the article:

From further reading, the most significant element from Star Fox 2 that was used in 64 was basically the idea for the all-range mode; even then, Cuthbert did not lay a hand on SF64 at any point in its development by EAD; only a couple of his ideas for SF2 inspired some of the 64 gameplay.
