No, he did need to say this. Kotaku and other lolsites were using him as a fanboy mouthpiece to further their pettiness by using his words out of context. If he didn't, he'd still be their meatshield.

Kotaku made it pretty clear a long time ago where they held their "allegiances." I'm not even talking about their horrid community; you know it's a cesspool when Michael Pachter can dump on them and be completely justified while doing it. But I remember Nintendo released that graph saying that 3rd party gams sold on the Wii. They were pretty much screaming "WERE IS TEH PROOF NITNEDO?? YOUR GRAPH PROVES NOTHIGN!!11"

I can imagine Brian Crecente typing away furiously on the his keyboard, the strenuous activity of proving Nintendo wrong on the internet sweating out his brand new perm. 

While I don't think Kotaku is that bad. I do find the bolded hilarious!
