They took a few steps backward. Old school Zelda fans certainly loved the transition back to a bird's eye view. It made the game work on a handheld.

I still hold the opinion that it was dumbed down for handhelds.

Well, I mean, in what way was it dumbed down? The puzzle solving was better than in any other 2-D Zelda (and a couple of 3-D ones), the boss fights were very creative and enjoyable...

Well, yes I'm comparing it the recent Zeldas (or the 3D ones) and it was dumbed down from that.
