Nintendo changed their Wii-kly update newletter to Nintendo Download or something like that (it was a news story on this very site, and may still be up there) so that it can encompass the Wii Virtual Console and the DSi Shop. I am pretty sure you'll be able to download stuff from day one using Nintendo Points (formerly Wii points) and judging by the lineup of downloadable games for the DSi in Japan I'm expecting a good launch.
Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.
One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.
