Emil gets a lot less whiny as the story progresses... its just a plot device. You should continue the game..

Not really. Emil is whiny for 99% of the game. Then he "changes" right before the conclusion. His character progression should have mirrored Marta's. She changed gradually as the game wore on. Emil was just god awful through out.
