So you never made the connection that no fantasy setting should have cannons, either?

What do you mean? No, no cannons. Cannons don't belong in fantasy.

Why not?

Anachronism. By tradition cannons and gunpowder don't belong in fantasy. For example Tolkien didn't have it, nor Robin Hood, the King Arthur legends and so on. And also, in the real world history cannons were introduced very late in the medieval age.

Man, what. There is no single line of technological acceptability in fantasy novels. Tolkien did have gunpowder, it was engineered by Saruman, Robin Hood was half-historical and came from the Crusades, the Arthur legends do involve cannons at the time of Arthur's death....I could go on.

Who says that whatever land this is has a technological progression equivalent to our own, anyway?

No single line but there is a common denominator by tradition in medieval fantasy, the tech is usually based on Medieval Europe, with small xceptions.

I'm just saying what I prefer. I've grown up in a tradition where medieval fantasy doesn't include gunpowder and steam. Exceptions are okay though, if they are portrayed as being very unique and extraordinary in that setting (like the Saruman example or Arthur legend), but I don't like when it is portrayed as a common and normal part of the world, like Blizzard/Warhammer steampunk dwarves.
