Your argument is built on the misconception that Nintendo Man just disproved. The DSi is an update that still plays DS games. If the system required a new format of software, it would then be a different system.
Now the DSi does include downloaded games which is a new feature, and these games clearly cannot be played on a DSlite, but they still both play the same DS cartridges.
