Convection cooling still sucks air through, just a lot slower. The bottom to top movement might help keep dust out, but it won't eliminate the problem.

Apple's G3 iMac line was convection cooled for several revisions. They ran as silent as the grave when the drives weren't spinning. The Wii should be even easier to cool, since it has no hard drive heat to worry about. Standing the Wii vertically will probably be a requirement for a convection cooled Wii. Air flow control is very important for that technique.
