That's...not a very satisfying reason. "We held back on the original, so we'd have material for the sequel"? It sounds a lot like "planned obsolescence."

I'll concede that the title leaves open the possibility that this isn't about Umbrella, but I'd be (a bit) surprised if it wasn't. Guess we'll find out in under 48 hours, eh?

As to the Dead Space comment, I'm mostly inclined to agree, and I find it amusing that we're acting like we're on opposite ends in this discussion when we're both looking forward to it. That said, I feel compelled to point out the other side's version of this story, because I DO find it understandable. As usual, famousringo was more eloquent in expressing it than I was, so I'll use his words here (from the Dead Space thread):

I think people are just sick of getting the bait & switch with every franchise that comes to Wii. It's a parade of genre-busting spinoffs with little in common with the parent franchise besides the IP, and low budgets in common with each other.

Hey, you're getting Dead Space, a third person horror/shooter. Just kidding, it's a rail shooter.

Hey, you're getting a new Resident Evil. A third person survival/horror game? Nope, yours is a rail shooter.

Hey, you're getting a new Soul Calibur fighter! And by fighter, we mean a cheapass hack & slash.

How about a new Castlevania game? Platforming and powerups? No, yours will be a 3D fighting game!

In short, this game is the latest in a series of bait-n-switch that third parties have been pulling on Wii owners, and I can see why it would get tiresome. Personally, I like light-gun shooters, so those don't bug me. I also liked Dead Rising: Chop 'Til You Drop. But I was miffed that the Castlevania platformer and the Soul Calibur fighter went elsewhere, and if I didn't like the spinoffs that I did I'd probably be solidly in the other side's camp.

You and I may disagree with the sentiment, but it's hard to say it's not understandable.

P.S. Who the hell is complaining about Excitebots?!?!

Alright, here's my attempt to discuss all of said points. And don't worry Noname, I know we're just having a discussion and probably agree on a lot more than we disagree.

First point - the Holding back argument. I don't consider it that way at all, but if you're experimenting with what could become a new franchise, including all possible content kind of kills your chance to do so. For instance, you suggested that instead of 4 and 5 this game will probably be all about RE 2. But your reasoning behind it is that if Umbrella Chronicles can skip RE2, Darkside Chronicles(DSC) can skip 4 and 5. But if RE 2 was skipped in UC for a reason other than future iterations, wouldn't it be skipped in DSC as well?

Besides, they're not going to go from a game based around the story of 3 games (with a level of new content) to a game based entirely around the story of one. There are going to be at least a couple RE chapters in here, and Veronica, 2, 4 and 5 are all the most likely ones. I doubt they'd be giving us gun survivor levels.

As for Umbrella. Didn't the first game end with a chapter titled "The fall of Umbrella" or something equally fatalistic? Of course the company will be in the game because their tied so tightly to the RE story line, but the title of this new outing alone tells us that Umbrella isn't the main focus.

Ok now for the Deadspace stuff. I understand people that have unhappy feelings towards the deadspace announcement. I was one of them. I still think it's going to be a great game. But remember, at the time of the announcement there was a complete meltdown. Of course, now we're talking about not just Resident Evil, but the Resident Evil Chronicles series. This isn't a slap or a bait and switch, this is a sequel to a very successful and much enjoyed game. Lots of people loved REUC. and the game was no slouch in the effort/design department. There really isn't much bait and switch here. It's sort of bait and bait. You liked our game? Here's a sequel! That seems pretty good to me.

And finally with the Excitebots comment - Did you see the "Excitebots boxart" thread? Holly hell that was a messy time! People freaked out and kicked puppies.  I'm just noticing that people have a tendency to jump to a conclusion and then take that conclusion very seriously, when the end product will probably be really good.
