I agree with all those reasons for getting a random gift. my parents bought us a video game for easter once, but they bought it weeks before, not the day of.
Sure maybe there are some parents who would actually pay attention to what their kid is playing, see a similar game is coming out on a special occasion (or not), and then buy it on launch day, but the chances are slim. Now, if the game had been out for a month, and the parent was looking for a christmas gift, and the kid didn't like it, I could totally buy that no problem.
EDIT: either way, you get the same end results. Copies purchased because someone thought it was a FPS.
