Have you played 2D Sonic games? If you have, and would like a similar experience, Sonic Unleashed is the way to go. The Daytime levels really aim to go back to that era of gameplay with linear levels and shifting camera angles. Nightime levels however, are nothing like usual Sonic gameplay (I find them to be a negative point in the game). In fact, Nighttime levels outnumber the daytime levels, so keep that in mind.
Speaking of which, I'd say that Black Knight is a mix of the two game elements from Unleashed. Sonic still retains his classic speed and linear style level design, but there's also a bigger focus on taking down foes and avoiding traps. It's still a Sonic game, but there are slight changes that make it a unique experience. Plus, you're Sonic with the sword the whole time, and not switching different styles of gameplay every other level. It's a nice thing to have the stability imo.
I dunno if that helped or not, but that would be my two cents.
