The 140m shipped PS3s is from a mistaken Kaz quote in August. He meant 130 million based on comparisons with Sony's own figures. Check the Official Big 3 Quarterly/Annual Results thread for more information. Sony had shipped "nearly 130 million" PS3s through March 2008, and then through September 2008 they were at 133.8m shipped worldwide. I'd imagine they shipped at least 2-3m for the quarter ending December 2008, though those results aren't in yet.
Official results from Sony will likely put them at 138.5m or something through December.
This article is misleading by the way - PS3 is only performing like GC in the USA which is where the 6.9m in 26 months is from. Game Cube never sold 75% as well as PS2 as the PS3 is doing in Europe at $400. The performances in Japan are strikingly similar though I'll admit.
