Here's the deal - you get a 256mb card, and if you were fast enough, a 512mb mem card for free. No one is forcing anyone to buy any console. You know that when you walk into a big box retailer and lay down the cash, duckies or plastic.
MS made sure everyone - everyone - who wants to go online gets online for just $20. I wasn't fast enough, so it would cost me $30. That's a couple pizzas and a few cans of Slimfast. I am still gonna buy an extra 20gb drive and 3 months of LIVE because I qualify.
I like being online to game, but it's far from necessary. Is it right MS is charging outrageous prices for this stuff? So what. It's nice to have, but definitely not a requirement for good gaming.
