I can't believe this has extended to so many pages, this is not a new remark.
Nintendo's competition, from way back in 2004 when they started to push the DS is all forms of entertainment. Of course you can draw conclusions from the way they're doing things, yes they absolutely won but why do you think they won? They won by making the competition irrelevant.
People talk about Malstrom, but really if you don't have the stomach to endure his provocations it's best you just read the Blue Ocean Strategy and the Innovator's Dilemma. This is not speculation, it is the OFFICIAL guideline by which Nintendo has been conducting its business since 2004.
It's been mentioned countless times in meetings, interviews and PR. The explanation that the competition with Microsoft and Sony doesn't exist comes straight from the Blue Ocean playbook, however if you also read the book you'll realize it doesn't mean they are in some alternative universe. That is ignorant, uninformed and incorrect.
