No. Hell no. The whole console needed to be designed and marketed around the controller for it to reach the mainstream success it has as fast as it has. If it were an add-on for a dying console, then nobody would have gotten it simply because the console was unsuccessful at the time. By just making a, "new" console, they could market the controller as the console. Which is exactly what they did.
