Gamestop will let you return it, it's broken. You'll be allowed to swap it for another one.
For anyone who has a problem and doesnt have their receipt or is out of warranty, you could always do what I did- buy a new copy, take it home, swap the instruments, take it back and say it's broken to receive a full refund and get rid of the dodgy instrument.
