Despite the HD consoles fighting an uphill battle against Wii, when combined, individually they need to fight each other on top of that. Besides, SCE isn't in a situation where it could drop the price and take more losses (slimline isn't going to drop the price in half).

@CGI-Quality: Well, it's pretty much a failure for losing that much money and marketshare. Difference with GC is, that the latter made money.

 

Indeed GC was a profit which was why Nintendo unlike SEGA was able to stay in business, though Sony will finally turn a profit in not too long, and will probably pass both GC and Xbox in sales, then software will fuel profits, it won't be a victory for Sony but not a total failure only if it kills the Playstation brand will it be considdered a failure...
