@Ronster: That's actually not that different from any other company... Only rare companies create a new business. Although, Sony did hit the jackpot with transistor radios back in the day.
Sony made mobile phones long before having the joint venture with Ericsson. The joint venture was born when both companies mobile phones were performing badly. Basically it eliminated one competitor from the market, while the costs were cut in half.
Everyone makes stupid business decisions, as you mentioned the mobile phones, around two decades ago, a mobile network and mobile phone manufacturer (among other things), Nokia, wanted to sell its mobile phones operations to its closest competitor, another mobile networks and mobile phones manufacturer, Ericsson. The swedes didn't want to buy the mobile phones operations, since just like Nokia, they saw their mobile phones future being in networks (it's been a couple of years since i checked the last time, but that time Ericsson was still the market leader in mobile networks).
