A pad of pressure-sensitive buttons in the shape of a plus sign. You would press in a direction to make the onscreen character move in that direction. Pressing two at a time, such as up and left, would make the character move diagonally. Unlike the more complicated controllers of its' competitors, this would be less daunting and more approachable to the traditional non-gamer market.

They could call it a 'directional pad', or, so they can stay 'cool' with the core gamer, the 'D-pad'.
