The assumption is correct when nothing changes in the industry. Sony managed to have a runaway success with PSX when the industry experienced change from 2D to 3D, Nintendo caught the world by storm when the videogames market crashed and Nintendo is winning again for driving a change in the industry by disrupting it. Between the early Ataris, NES and SNES, PSX and PS2 nothing changed, so the previous leader and the brand holder came up with "automatic" victory.
The current problem M$ and Sony are facing is, that the "traditional" way of playing games isn't a key to victory, so they can't have consoles next gen that rely on the same control methods as 360 and PS3 and they can't just copy Wii Remote either, since that would lead Nintnedo to win again without doing anything, which leaves them two choises; either to make something different that haven't been done before or copy the Wii Remote and improve it. Now, copying the Wii Remote and improving it to support 1:1 controls would have been an easy way, but since Nintendo is releasing WM+, they need to think something else. And the same goes for Nintendo too, although they could release a console with improved WM+ controller and win next gen due to the brand name, if the competition is doing the same too.
