Nintendo sells a lifestyle. Nintendo's commercials not only show the gameplay, but they sell a lifestyle. Their commercials show people having fun together with other people.
Sony is trying to sell a console, which simply means nothing to a large segment of the population. Their commercials almost seem isolated, anti-social, cold.
This is a very interesting, and I think accurate, comparison of their NA commercials.
The European "this is living" ads I wouldn't typify as "isolated" or "cold," but more just as bizarre, somewhat obnoxious nonsense.
What are the 360 and Wii ads for Europe like?
"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."
Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.
