had you registered your DS, it would have been in warranty, as they give you a free 3 months extra. I have the same DS, and i had the same problem and they gave me a brand new one.
Also, the place that Nintendo sends all their hardware warranty items is right around the corner from where I live, so I can just swing by and drop mine off and pick it up. When I got my DS back, it worked for 2 days, and then the screen died. I think the screen ribon cable just came loose, as they gave me the same unit back instead of a new one again.
