Gameboy Color has double processing power, double ram and games that could not be played on conventional GB's. I think that qualifies it as a separate system, otherwise we would but Wii and GC sales together.

That stuff is required in order to run a color image. A black and White game boy only need to know on or off for 160x144pixels Roughly 3 Kbytes for the video alone. Where the GBC needed to support 56 colors which means it takes more Memory to achieve the same image. The most common GBC game only used 32 colors and they were backwards compatable. It also means more data streaming through the CPU

The extra power did not go into any thing new.

GB and GBC both could only display only 40 sprites. in an 8x8 or 8x16 size. Sound and buttons were exactly the same on these systems.

PSP-3000 has more RAM different hardware. PS2 slim has a different mobo, DSi has internal storage,  HW changes the whole time what matters is what the developers make the games for and you show me a system that will play its next gen coutnerparts games and we will talk.
