I agree with the OP here.
Gameboy and Gameboy colour were fairly different. There were a lot of games that weren't playable on GB, only GBC (I mean a lot, I think it's at least 10% of the later GBC games, maybe 33%).
So I think they should be split up. The problem is, how?
We have data with them combined.
What you could do to split up the sales is:
For HW: GB sales = sales up untill GBC released, + 20% of the total GB sales for the next year.
SW: No way to do it.
Anyway, for HW.
GBC release = November 98.
GB ships up untill end of September 98 = 69.56M. + October 98 = ~ 70M.
Ships next year: 15M. So between 73-77M for GB LT.
That means GBC shipped = 40-45M.
So for Nintendo handhelds, this is the sales.
GB = 73-77M
GBC = 40-45M
GBA = 80M
DS = 90M (expected LT = 150M +)

Long story short, DS best hardware seller Nintendo's ever had confirmed?

Yeah, pretty definately. I'm not sure if DSL > GBA (I think DS phat is more than 10M, more ala 15-20), but it will within end of Q1 09.
What is amazing, is that even considering this, DS has the highest AR of a major handheld ever. As we all know higher installbase leads to lower attachment rate, but DS still has the highest (meaning it has already outshipped the GBA SW wise by end of Q1 08). Even more amazing as it still sells HW.
