If true, I think it is because:

1) America is DS's weakest market (by percentage sold/population).  PSP is stronger in the USA than anywhere else, much as N64 was very strong in the USA, but pretty weak elsewhere.

2) Nintendo is increasing shipments (according to a Gamestop briefing today) this quarter (July-Sept) despite rumoured limitations.  Wii also seems to be the successor to the PS2 in the USA, while DS is in Japan...
