Brand loyalty maybe at the beginning but no more, you would have to be a big fan and lets face it if you were you would already own one. This was one of the arguments used in the HYPE news item. Which is why the price point is so critical to Sony.
Now the sales numbers are being held at bay and the 360 looks to be taking a commanding lead over the PS3 and Sony can do nothing about it we now get the "well the Blu Ray will see us through".
I just do not buy the Blu Ray argument. As a consumer I am still disappointed that Sony forced the Trojan on a non related industry.
Now that the players are getting back to a point they were last year when we had competition I think this will mean that one of the selling points a cheap blu ray player also diminishes reason for a PS3 blu ray purchase.
Sony will still end up with a huge console base and it still needs to see the life cycle through because calling it quits to early is not an option. I would say though that it is not beyond the realms of possibility for Sony to try to get a new system out before MS mainly because MS are looking increasingly comfortable with staying the course.
Of course we have the PS3 Slim and the 360 Slim to hit the streets yet but I cannot help but feel the modular approach MS took was in the end the right one especially now the Arcade for so long discussed as a waste of shelf space is starting to sell, but MS did have to un cripple it to make it happen.
