sure PC's could do XGA since 2 decades but which was the first game or graphics card that was actually worth playing at THAT resolution.. Quake? and when was that '96. For me though XGA gaming on the pc didnt kick off until 2000- the time quake 3 arena and the geforce one heated things up.
So I'd say consoles arent too far behind. the XBox could do 720p and that didnt happen long after even though it was a glorified PC

a. a AAA 3D sonic title
b. a nintendo developed game that has a "M rating"
c. redesgined PS controller
d. SEGA back in the console business
e. M$ out of the OS business
