Not quite sure what you're after, but it's definately the "mainstream", that is "destroying" the industries. It's the bad businessmodels that is doing it.
What both industries have in common, is wasting too much money into single projects and trying to expand the audience to offset the increasing costs by "gimping" their products to be easier to chew for people outside the target audience, while keeping the barrier of entry too high for the people that didn't already like the type of product.

As you mentioned the Kubric movies, they are considered as art, because they are made for their audience, without trying to tap into other audiences.
No matter whether you like a certain movie/game, you still more gladly watch a movie/play a game that honestly is what it is, than something that isn't what it tries to be.
