NPD will report on USA hardware and software totals for the four weeks ending November 1 on November 13 at 6:30 PM EST. Despite a marginal decrease in industry revenue in the previous month compared to September 2007, October 2008 was an absolute banner month. In the Americas, just the top ten games accounted for 4.5m units in software sales led by Fable II which sold hundreds of thousands units more than the top title in October 2007.

Hardware sales were up from 2007 as well, with Wii in particular setting the all time non-holiday sales record for the Americas. Earlier this year, DS sold 783,000 units in June according to NPD figures for the USA. However, that period was five weeks. Vgchartz data shows Wii selling 934,000 units in the Americas for only four weeks. Adjusting down to just the United States, Wii likely sold about 850,000 units. Based on the VGC Americas totals, we expect NPD to report that Nintendo also sold about 600,000 DS portables in the USA. Microsoft for its part likely sold about 300,000 Xbox 360s in the USA. We also expect NPD to report that Sony sold about 220,000 PS3s, 208,000 PSPs, and about 128,000 PS2s in the USA.

On a weekly basis, across the Americas, VGC has the following hardware totals:

Software sales for the month were led by a bounty of new entries, and Nintendo’s previously released, but steady sellers. A number of notable games missed the overall top ten but still sold well for the period. In fact, roughly two dozen games outside the top ten sold over 100,000 units for the month. Guitar Hero: World Tour, with only the Xbox 360 version in the top ten is a good example of games that didn’t make the cutoff, as the Wii, PS3 and PS2 versions all sold over 100,000 units as well. Every platform, except for PSP, had multiple games sell over 100,000 units this month.

That said, the VGC top ten for the Americas is as follows. The usual caveat applies – multiply the total by 0.9 to arrive at VGC estimates for what NPD USA figures will be for the period.

Next month, with Gears of War 2, Resistance 2, Animal Crossing, massive hardware increases, and increases for older hits should be quite fascinating. The top ten for November should largely depend on the number of Wiis available to sell, as an attach rate of six to eight is far different on 1.3m Wiis vs. the 1.75m or 2m Wiis Nintendo could probably sell.
