Let's wait. When the game goes gold, we'll get an idea of what that game pushes. Until then, what's the point, other than working ourselves up over schrodinger's cat?

"Schrodinger's cat"? What's that?

As to the topic, the Wii can probably handle crowds decently well, albeit nowhere near the scale of a Dead Rising. If the NPCs don't have to actually do anything, the number probably goes up to the several hundred. If there's a need for them to have some sort of rudimentary intelligence, a la Dead Rising, then it appears that around a hundred is the current limit.

Still, like in Kingdom Hearts II developers will probably have to take advantage of several tricks to create massive crowds of characters. You don't need all 1,000 characters to actually be onscreen at once; having some stay in the background, and spawning them in when their turn is up is one technique that would help a lot, even if it is "cheating."
