As a PSWii60 owner, I don't much care who wins what, though I find it interesting. Obviously the Wii has won. As for this thread and the runner-up spot:
I don't know how people can still be so sure that PS3 will overtake the 360 worldwide. I just can't see it happening.
If the PS3 started winning weeks by 75k every single week, it would take about 18 months to catch 360. If they win by 50k weekly, it would take well over 2 years.
And in the past few months, the 360 has been stretching the gap, let alone being out sold by that much.
I have no doubt that PS3 will eventually close the gap. But I have trouble seeing how they can catch the Xbox the way things are going. I just don't.
1. Exclusives - not enough of them. There's a few. FFXIII in Japan. GT5 someday (though lots of those folks bought for Prologue) But it's not like the other side has none.
2. Blu-Ray - While they won the war, not selling as much as they hoped, and stand-alones are dropping rapidly in price. And digital distribution is picking up on a much faster pace.
3. Price - We know that's an issue - we're going to see it in the holiday numbers, I guarantee.
4. 360 momentum - They are picking up the pace right now, not losing it. They are trying desperately to expand the audience, and it's working. They have some heat in Japan, they are working the casual side of mainland Europe, etc. etc. They are never going to post Wii-like numbers, but they are doing enough expansion into the mainstream audience to not lose to the PS3 by 50k a week.
If I had to bet all my money on whether the PS3 catches 360 worldwide before the launch of the first next generation system, whether that's in 2011, 2012, or 2013, I'd say no.
