I think Gears came close...and that's Gears. A lot of people thought this game would outsell Gears 2. There was a vote, and I think LBP took second place with a question of "which game will sell more units."

I know a pretty hardcore PS3 fanboy in my WoW guild. He's playing Fallout 3. Doesn't care about LBP. The IP is gonna need to build word of mouth before it reaches the monumental proportions that Sony fans hope it will reach for the mainstream, which I assume is Gears/Mario levels.

Nobody should have expected this to outsell Gears 2....especially opening week. That is a little far-fetched.

Ah yes, Gears holds the record at 961,000 for first week sales worldwide..For a single, new IP on 1 system.

But I think Gears was/is a very special case - a perfect storm which we may not see very often, if ever again this generation. It released at a time the X360 was still deeply embedded with the 'shooter box' image, and had a lot of previous Xbox owners hungry for a top-tier shooter, and Gears game them just that.

On the other end, LBP is catering to a totally foreign (at least in my observation) market for the Playstation, and it should sell just like that.

Anything near 500,000 worldwide first week (imo) is a stunning success for LBP. Anyone that thought it'd be well over was/is crazy. Yes, I know there's the whole issue of moving the date, but I think when we look at the first full 2 weeks, it's still going to be around the 1m mark worldwide....Not great in some people's eyes, merely because the game was hyped too much for being a casual game. Casual games aren't serviced well with a major marketing blitz.

Gears was the first real AAA game on the console with broad appeal, and it was lightyears ahead of anything else available on "next gen" consoles at the time. I remember back then when I hated the 360, seeing the game and saying, "Damn, 360 finally got a real, badass game that isn't over-rated." It was the MGS4 of the Xbox 360. Everybody knew about it and knew it was great.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.
